Here are a few more from last week's photo shoot.
Briella is a professional who does this for a living-she did an excellent job.
I did have to slow her down to MY speed though since most real models are used to doing the 'pose-pose-pose' thing with each camera click.
This photo session would have made a great lesson in models and photographers working together. I had a certain idea ahead of time that ended up not really working, she had a way of posing that I wasn't used to, but during the last hour we met in a middle area and I came away with some great images.

I recently finished a book cover called "Skyship Academy: Crimson Rising", intended for teen / science fiction readers.
I've included the original layout and the original stock photo sent to me for use-they did want the character to have brown hair instead of blonde. When I get such a detailed comp to go by I do my best to follow it while still 'jazzing it up' a bit. My recent trip to the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola and the photos I took there came in handy for designing the goggles and giving them a kind of Steam Punk feel.

I tried out one of the oldest tricks in the photography book yesterday with some really cool results.
Vaseline applied to a clear filter on my camera made this dreamy effect.
No Photoshop required.

A promotional short to promote the Technicolor process for use in industrial and commercial films. I don't see a date but it looks like it was made around the early 1950's.
There are several moments now seen as awkward, but my favorite is at the 5:35 mark.

Fun With Photoshop Brushes

As a follow up on yesterday's post, I thought I'd share a couple of experiments with some of the new Photoshop brushes I downloaded this week.
The illustration with the hand is done entirely with Photoshop brushes-the Victorian pattern, the splatters and the skeleton hand are all part of 3 different brush sets.
The photograph has added textures and patterns from 3 other brush sets.
So as you can see, as with anything in Photoshop, the possibilities are only limited by your imagination.

It looks like, from my internet research, that the Cokin company has ceased to exist.

Friday Video: My 1:36 With Marilyn

I finally saw "My Week With Marilyn" today. Wow! Michelle Williams does a fantastic job of channeling Marilyn. The scenes and cinematography also reflect perfectly the 1950's era. Marilyn fans will recognize many familiar images recreated from less famous candid photos of her on the sets of movies and being surrounded by the press. Michelle Williams captures the acting/singing of Marilyn, but more importantly in this film, the real vulnerability of a truly troubled star behind the scenes. I actually forgot I was watching an actress 'playing' Marilyn for 1 hour and 36 minutes.

Here's an illustration I did by combining the elements of around 10 different old steel cut engravings into one image. I discovered Dover Publications years ago as a great source for this type of collage art.

Photo Shoot With Ryan

He will be the male character on a book cover I am illustrating for Random House.
He has one of those 'Hollywood' kind of stories-no intention of being a model-he was grabbed from the street by a local model/talent agency while helping a friend move just a couple of weeks ago.
I think I found him just in time, he has now signed on with an agency in Miami and I'll probably never be able to afford him again.

Steve In A Museum

Here is a photo-illustration I did that will be in the Westmont Museum of Art in Santa Barbara, CA. The show is called "5x5 Invitational" and begins November 30. It will be a fund raising event/auction.
Others in the show will be Milton Glaser, Mark English, Christo and Gary Kelley...along with 400 more artists. But it's kind of neat.

About 3 months ago I received a letter from Westmont with an enclosed 5" x 5" piece of watercolor paper and the request to do whatever I wanted and mail it back to be in the show. This is a signed print on archival paper, mounted to the watercolor paper.

I'm still not sure how I got on their list.

Here's a free tip that you may not know about.
On Facebook the default 'profile picture' is a small postage stamp size image in the upper left corner of your page. To make that image bigger-create a new one that is exactly 200 x 600 pixels in size, delete your current profile picture, then upload the new one.
This new, larger, very vertical image gives you room to include a little bit of information about yourself and business.
The vertical design is kind of fun to play with-here are few that I've done for myself, with the intent of rotating them every few days to keep the page fresh.

I just finished a new book cover and type design project
Here is the description...
"It’s the Roaring Twenties and the economy is strong. Phineas Gannon and his morally feeble friend Morton Cunningham are living life large in California by challenging one another to a variety of sporting events.

Passionate about their battles, their one-upmanship far exceeds normal standards of friendly competition.

Phineas has a generous heart, but it’s a heart that’s failing. Before he dies, he wants one last victory over Mort—a playoff game for the last coveted slot in the Los Angeles Winter Baseball League.

While Mort signs several Major Leaguers, Phineas learns about a skilled Lakota team from South Dakota and hires them. Retired pitcher Duke Maner agrees to manage the Lakota players, although he cautions Phin that it would be easier to jump over the moon than to win with these untested men. And yet, through his relationship with the team’s elder Amos Wise Heart, Phineas learns another way to define victory."

I had a good time with this, one of those cases were I saw the image in my mind immediately. Based on the author and publisher's original rough concept I added a sense of magic that the story seems to be all about.

As I've said before I like to go into a photo shoot with at least a couple of ideas.
Originally I had planned an "all black" and an "all white" set of photos.
We did this for a little while, (top photo) but Beth brought these amazingly colored veils and costumes that were impossible to not use.
So the idea strayed into a LOT of color with very nice results.

Last Thursday I had a photo shoot with Beth, a model I've photographed before.
She is famous for her dramatic poses and a look that seems like it's from past centuries.
Rembrandt and Rubens would have loved her.
In these two I was experimenting with blue gels over my lights, but with a small part NOT blue.

Photo Shoot Preparations

I thought I'd share a shot of one small part of preparing for a photo shoot.
I like to lay out everything I think I'll be using for the session all in one place, in this case a bar top.
This prevents wasting time searching and scrambling around during the shoot.
Here I have a couple of extra lenses, memory cards, an extra charged battery, a lens cloth and an assortment of filters I think might work for the ideas I will be photographing.
There's nothing that can frustrate the rhythm of a shoot more than having to stop and search for something while a model has the perfect pose going.

A corset from 1890 was designed to swell certain areas and reduce others.
While attractive to potential suitors, it also made breathing difficult for the wearer.
This led to some romantic confusion-does she heave with emotion because a gallant gentleman whispered sweet nothings in her ear, or because she laced her corset too tightly?
Now you know the origin of “heaving cleavage” literature.

In the early days of my first experimenting with collage/mixed media illustration I sometimes got the comment-"Looks like Monty Python" when showing my portfolio. It was usually said in a complimentary way. What they really meant was it looks like the short animations by Terry Gilliam that appeared on the TV show.
Take a look at the his animation technique used before the computer in this short film.
The visual images of Terry Gilliam are still inspiring to me today through his career as a movie director.
